Data Warehousing

A Data Warehouse is a computer system designed for archiving and analyzing an organization's historical data, such as sales, salaries, or other information from day-to-day operations. Normally, an organization summarizes and copies information from its operational systems to the data warehouse on a regular schedule, such as every night or every weekend; after that, management can perform complex queries and analysis on the information without slowing down the operational systems.

The increasingly sophisticated nature of information theft, and the continued emergence of new data privacy protection regulations worldwide, requires strong data security. Effective information security starts by protecting data at the source - the databases in which it resides. Historically most organizations have relied on network perimeter and application level security to restrict access to sensitive data, leaving their databases and the sensitive information inside exposed.

For over a decade, IT organizations have been plagued by high data warehousing costs, with millions of dollars spent annually on specialized, high-end hardware and DBA personnel overhead for performance tuning. The root cause: using data warehouse database management (DBMS) software, like Oracle and SQLServer that were designed 20-30 years ago to handle write-intensive OLTP workloads, not query-intensive analytic workloads.

Predictive analytics have been used by different industries for years to solve difficult problems that range from detecting credit card fraud to determining patient risk levels for medical conditions. It combines data mining and machine-learning technologies to create statistical models based on historical data. It then uses these models to predict future events. Extracting the power from the data requires powerful algorithms behind predictive analytics.
